This list isn't the final word really and unlike high caliber magazines like Rolling Stone, I won't be including less funny material from a bygone era because it was influential later. If there's one thing that can kill a joke, it's having to analyze things piece by piece to figure out why it's funny. That's why this list contains only the movies that have made me laugh the hardest.
And I'll go ahead and break my own rule and add Duck Soup by the Marx Brothers.
Any Groucho Marx movie is worth a chuckle, but to tell you the truth I've never managed to stay awake for an entire Groucho Marx movie. Ask my cousins Ellen Jones or Evelyn McDonald because I think they actually stayed awake for it.
Coming to America
Samuel L. Jackson robbing McDougals is priceless.
Hot Shots part Deux
I don't think I've actually watched this all the way through but I like the idea of it and the cover is funny.
Fletch
This role is perfect for Chevy Chase. He uses all kinds of great voices and uses ridiculous false names like Hannerhan and Dr. Rosenpenis to pull the wool over the eyes of everyone from cops to mechanics.
The Naked Gun Series
"Nice Beaver!"
Billy Madison
Watching the O'Doyles hit the banana peel and fly off a cliff is priceless.
What About Bob
Pete and I think that Bill Murray is basically the funniest person anywhere. I could watch Murray Baby Step his way out of the psychologists office and into the elevator where he loses it everyday.
Liar Liar
"What the hell are you doing?" "I'm kicking my ass! Do you mind?"
Anchorman
"How now brown cow."
Meet the Parents
Owen Wilson plays a guy that, modeling his life after Jesus, learns carpentry and carves a gazebo out of one piece of wood that later catches on fire and Ben Stiller is never funnier.
Blazing Saddles
"Now, come on, boys! Where's your spirit? I don't hear no singin'. When you was slaves, you sang like birds. Go on, how 'bout a good ol' nigger work song?"
The Royal Tenenbaums
"Wildcat, wildcat"
The Man Who Knew too Little
Bill Murray's gonna light up some ambassadors at the stroke of midnight!
Joe vs the Volcano
Ah, that perfect mix of Romeo and Juliet, Robinson Crusoe, and the Odyssey. "They couldn't think up anything better than a braincloud?"
School of Rock
Jack Black is a funny guy and his love of Dio style rock and roll shines through here.
Tommy Boy
"Fat guy in a little coat."
Bowfinger
"Keep it together. Keep it together. Keep it together." The difficult thing to come to is whether Eddie Murphy is funnier as Kit Ramsey or his inept brother Jif Ramsey.
Hot Rod
Can we please get a petition together to get Andy Samberg to make another feature length comedy?
Happy Gilmore
"Why don't you go into your hole." It's no telling how often this is quoted among pissed off golf players.
Spinal Tap
First of all, there's the background of people believing this was a real band. Second of all, Christopher Guest is a genius.
The Princess Bride
This came from some excellent source material and then was executed perfectly by Spinal Tap's director Rob Reiner.
Waiting for Guffman
I know this seems like it's turning into a Guest list (he was the 6 fingered man after all), but this one is a thing of perfection. It doesn't get much better than when Corky calls everyone at the town meeting bastard people and storms out.
Spy Hard
Kind of a dumb movie but Owen Wilson and Eddie Murphy make a great combo.
Wrongfully Accused
Leslie Nielsen's mock noir delivery is worth rewatch after rewatch.
Big Trouble in Little China
I only wish I knew what Jack Burton says when it's Miller time.
Kung Pao
This movie takes a line from the guys at Mst3k and speaks for the actors. Lots of fun.
The Mst3k savaging of A Touch of Satan, The Legend of Boggy Creek II, and Time Chasers
There are easily a dozen Mystery Science Theater episodes that are guaranteed to send you into fits but these are probably the very best of the best.
Ghostbusters I
Come on, you know you've wished to see Zuul appear in your fridge.
Yes Man
"No man! No man! No man!"
Dumb and Dumber
"Aspen, where the beer flows like wine." "Just when I thought you couldn't possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this... and totally redeem yourself!"
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
This is a high school dream and everybody just loves Ferris.
Groundhog Day
"I'll give you a winter prediction: It's gonna be cold, it's gonna be grey, and it's gonna last you for the rest of your life."
Hangover
Zach Galifianakis makes this glorious.
Young Frankenstein
"Blucher!"
Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail
"The black knight always triumphs!"
Airplane
Maybe my favorite thing here is the argument over the purpose of the white and red zones.
Clue
"I had to stop her from screaming."
